Venu Srinivasan is an Indian businessperson. He is the Chairman and Managing Director of the TVS Motors, and also the Managing Director of Sundaram Clayton Ltd.^[1] He has also served as the President of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for the year 2009-10.^[1]

 Career

Venu Srinivasan is the grandson of the TVS Group's founder, T. V. Sundaram Iyengar.^[2] He started working as a mechanic while in high school.^[3] He graduated as an engineer from the University of Madras, and then obtained a Masters' Degree in Management from the Purdue University in USA.^[1] While in US, he worked as a door-to-door Bible salesman for about 5 hours a week.^[3]
He became the Managing Director (MD) of Sundaram Clayton Ltd. in May 1979, and the MD of the TVS Motors in 1986.^[4] In July 2002, he also became the Chairman of TVS Motors. He has been involved in CII for 18 years in various capacities, including the Chairman of the CII (Southern Region).
In 1990, when TVS Motors' joint venture partner Suzuki refused to bail the company out after a ravaging strike, Srinivasan decided to deal strictly with the labor unions. He shut the factory down for three months, and forced the unions to relent. Then he overhauled the company operations by upgrading the plant, investing in new technology and implementing Toyota-style quality programs. He brought in Professor Kumar Bhattacharyya of the University of Warwick as a consultant. TVS Motors split with Suzuki in 2001, and started manufacturing on its own.^[5]
Under his leadership as the Managing Director (MD), Sundaram Clayton's brakes division won the Deming Prize in 1998 for having "achieved distinctive performance improvements through application of company-wide quality control."^[6] In 2004, TVS Motors also won the Deming Award during his tenure as the MD, becoming the first two-wheeler company in the world to do so.^[7]

 Personal life

Venu Srinivasan is married to Mallika Srinivasan. The couple has a daughter Lakshmi Venu, who is engaged to N.R. Rohan Murthy, the son of Infosys chairman N.R. Narayana Murthy and Sudha Murthy.
